Bay Colony Antiques is extremely proud to offer for sale this fantastic 19th century antique Victorian Gothic revival lectern. This is without a doubt one of the finest lecterns we’ve had the pleasure of offering and it will probably be quite some time until we encounter another one comparable to this. This example has a cushioned surface which is ideal to support old leather or paper covers. The work surface has multiple gilt borders around the edge & the board that holds the book in place is also pierce carved but can really only be seen in the pictures showing the cushion. The pedestal is absolutely superb with pierced trefoils at the base & an allover gilt stenciling. Trefoils were used extensively in Gothic period architecture but the design dates back to antiquity. The stand is in exceptional condition with our only notes being very minimal paint loss and a water stain on the cushion. The old labels show this was once offered for sale by the celebrated Irish antique dealer, Gerald Kenyon. Gerald was a third generation antique dealer who took over his Grandfather’s shop in Chester, England before opening two more stores in Dublin, Ireland. He was an expert on Irish furniture and his work on the subject remains the gold standard today. The lectern measures 22 1/2” wide x 20” deep at the base x 40” tall. The book platform measures 26” wide x 15 1/2” tall.
