19th C Antique Vermont Grain Painted Blanket Chest / Blanket Box
19th C Antique Vermont Grain Painted Blanket Chest / Blanket Box
With our highest compliments and utmost honors, Bay Colony Antiques is extremely proud to bring to market this fantastic early 19th century antique Vermont grain painted blanket chest. The painted surface is in exceptional condition and is meant to imitate crotched Mahogany with a cross banded border. This is without a doubt one of the nicest blanket chests we’ve encountered in quite some time and the best grain painted furniture was made in Vermont where the new communities had a taste for high fashion but limited means to access it. Vermont became more heavily settled in the early 19th century and while Mahogany did make its way to the Green Mountain state it was more costly from trading hands multiple times and the families didn’t have as much wealth as those in major cities. The chest has an impressive set of dovetails joining each board and has compressed bun feet. This didn’t come to us with a key but the original lock, hasp, & hinges are still present. The interior has a lidded candle till that measures 6” wide x 18” deep x 4 3/4” tall. The interior measures 34 1/4” wide x 18” deep x 15 3/4” tall. The overall dimensions of the chest are 37 1/4” wide x 20 1/4” deep x 21 3/4” tall. When the lid is fully open the height is 41 1/4” tall. The chest is in exceptional condition with our only notes being minimal surface wear.
