19TH CENTURY ANTIQUE TIGER MAPLE & BIRDS EYE MAPLE EMPIRE PERIOD SABER LEG SIDE CHAIR ~ NEW YORK CITY
Thank you for shopping with Bay Colony Antiques. We're a third generation family owned business furnishing homes all over the world. We aggressively pursue important antiques, decorative arts, and objects of interest for our most discerning clients.
Bay Colony Antiques is proud to offer for sale this fantastic 19th century antique tiger & birds eye maple saber leg chair. The chair is crafted from the absolute best grades of tiger & birds eye maple with very desirable bold grain patterns. The front legs & rear stiles feature horizontal running tiger maple with the grain on the seat rail & curved stretcher deliberately running perpendicular. The splat and crest are well formed with good use of negative space and again, an exceptional wood stock used. Dendrologists are still not 100% certain on what causes this strange birds eye figuring in the grain and we've heard every theory from fungal infections, to genetic mutations but the best answer is; we don't quite know yet. We've had to purchase birds eye stock for restorations in the past and it's becoming increasingly expensive. The best examples are cut into veneers and used for luxury automobiles, instrument making, and custom cabinetry. The chair measures 17 1/2" wide x 16 3/4" deep x 32 1/4" tall with a seat height of 17".
