Bay Colony Antiques is delighted to offer for sale this charming 19th century antique Pennsylvania 6 drawer pine spice chest. Aside from making food taste better spices also have a wide array of health benefits. Spices have been used for culinary & medical purposes since the Paleolithic era and were a luxury good in 18th and 19th century homes. This spice box has 6 drawers and is made from pine. Each drawer is constructed with hand cut dovetails, chamfered panels, old iron nails, and have a brass knob for a pull. The chest has a unique & very fine scrolling pattern at the center apron and sides. Spice chests are among the most collectible pieces of furniture and we are absolutely thrilled to offer this rare Pennsylvania example to our clients around the world. We’re always looking for good spice chests but there aren’t too many out there to be had. Earlier this year we purchased two with tombstone doors knowing we had a client for one and were excited to offer the other. Our plans quickly changed because when we sent our client the two to choose from he made us an offer for both. If you’re looking for the next tier up please feel free to reach out to us and we can give you first access to our next find but fair warning it may be a while and the boxes are generally 10-20 thousand depending on their rarity and complexity. This example is completely unadulterated and the original red wash can be seen on the drawer edges where it saw less oxidation. The drawers are marked with old script but we were having some trouble making out the names. The cabinet measures 14 1/4” wide x 10 1/4” deep x 24” tall.
