19TH CENTURY ANTIQUE FEDERAL PERIOD MAHOGANY & BIRDS EYE MAPLE BOSTON TAMBOUR LADIES SECRETARY DESK

Thank you for shopping with Bay Colony Antiques. We're a third generation family owned business furnishing homes all over the world. We aggressively pursue important antiques, decorative arts, and objects of interest for our most discerning clients.

Bay Colony Antiques is proud to offer for sale this exceptional early 19th century antique Federal period Mahogany & Maple tambour ladies secretary desk. We’re extremely fond of tambour secretary desks and always try to keep a few period & custom examples in stock. Secretary desks like this were almost exclusively made in Boston and nearby cities like Portsmouth, Salem, & New Bedford. This desk was made CA 1810 and is decorated with exceptional cuts of Mahogany, Tiger Maple, & Birds Eye Maple. The upper section has a molded top with two mahogany drawers with cross banded mahogany borders & a vibrant tiger maple border outlining the entire cornice. The tambour doors actuate with ease and open to reveal 4 more interior drawers and nice large pigeon hole cubbies which are much more practical for modern use opposed to the smaller ones you normally see. The top of the lid and the center valence door are again choice cuts of Mahogany both with a string inlay border. The lower case has 3 superb, bold grain, Birds Eye Maple faces with a contrasting Ebony & Holly string inlay with a cross banded mahogany border at the edges. We're in houses all week long purchasing antiques, appraising antiques, delivering, and studying collections both public and private. We can without a doubt say this is one of the best tambour secretary desks we've had the pleasure of offering in some time. The desk is in fantastic condition with our only note being a few missing veneers that we'll have our woodworker address. Now after 200+ years it can seem a little pedantic pointing out the smallest of condition issues, especially on a desk as impressive as this, but as part of our full disclosure policy we'll bring to light anything we note on inspection. Ideally we'd like to fix every little thing before we list them but with the speed at which we're moving we simply don't have the time. Every single day my brother is bringing in more and more investment grade antiques with no signs of slowing down. We've almost doubled our number of house calls in the last year and are getting first access to the best antiques surfacing in all of New England. The desk measures 38" wide x 19 1/4" deep x 52" tall.
