19th C Antique Federal Period Birds Eye Maple Cannonball Bed - Rope Bed
19th C Antique Federal Period Birds Eye Maple Cannonball Bed - Rope Bed
With our highest compliments and utmost honors, Bay Colony Antiques is proud to offer for sale this fantastic 19th century antique Federal Birds Eye Maple Cannonball bed. The bed is solid Birds Eye Maple and features an extremely bold grain throughout the entire piece. The bed has a paneled headboard with a curved crest rail with cannonball ends. The footboard has a Birds Eye Maple blanket rail with a wonderful turning pattern that adds character & utility to the bed. The bed measures 53 1/4" wide x 83 3/4" deep x 49 1/2" tall overall
The bed would have originally used a rope foundation which is why there are holes drilled into the rails. A rope foundation can still be used or you can install iron L brackets to support the box spring or have a custom box spring with a rabbet edge made. A rabbet edge box spring is shaped like an uppercase T and the flared ends sit flush on the rail with the body hanging between them. Every major US city has a mattress maker and in reality most of the mattresses you purchase at your local store are made locally and the different brand names are added at the end. The interior measures 46 1/4" wide x 76" deep. A rabbet edge box spring is designed to sit on top of the rails and the width at the outside of the rails is 52 1/2" wide so you'd get an extra 6" of useable width.
