Bay Colony Antiques is proud to bring to market this exceptional early 19th century antique Pennsylvania Sheraton cherry & tiger maple dresser / chest of drawers. The case mainly consists of a native cherry with solid tiger maple drawer faces. The chest retains its original escutcheons and turned pulls with carved half columns and tiger maple veneer along the top edge. This is a country made piece by a skilled cabinet maker who was likely familiar with novel cabinet making styles but didn’t have a sufficient market to perfect them. In an institutional level cabinet shop each piece was carefully drawn out and meticulously crafted to perfect standards and proportions. Country furniture can feel more intimate from little idiosyncrasies in the cabinet makers work and their make-do approach to certain obstacles. This cabinet maker likely didn’t have access to imported mahogany and opted for a nice contrasting decoration achieved with the dark cherry & warm tiger maple. The chest is in very nice condition with our only condition note being a stable age split on the top that’s not at risk of expanding. The chest measures 37 3/4" wide x 21" deep x 44 1/4" tall.
