We're delighted to offer for sale this great 19th century George III period Chippendale style leather top mahogany campaign desk. Campaign furniture was designed to be easily transported for use by officers and their counterparts during a military campaign. Some pieces have collapsible legs, and others break apart into easy to manage sections. This desk can be taken apart into 3 components, two banks and a top section. These are great for our clients in spatially restrictive cities who desire an antique desk. These were made by master cabinet makers to each general / officers specific requests and needs. An officers wants and needs were of course set by the officer so you can see the area where one might abuse his power. It's said the more luxurious and furnished the officers tent was the greater his social standing. There are first hand diary accounts of some British officers with a baggage train in excess of 15 miles.
Each mahogany bank has three drawers that open & close with ease all equipped with original brass ringlet pulls and escutcheons. The upper section has two smaller drawers that perfectly match the lower ones with a large center drawer. We're eternally grateful for the gentleman who commissioned this desk. Many of these have very narrow knee holes that simply don't work well with today's larger seating. The desk top has a molded edge with a tan earthen colored leather surface in good condition with minimal staining and old hide / tanning markings. The leather top is hand tooled with gilt floral border designs and additional tooling at the outermost edge. This desk is larger than most measuring 60 1/2" wide x 31" deep x 32" tall. The knee hole space is 22" wide at the narrowest point at the baseboards x 26" tall.
