19th C Antique Centennial Chippendale Mahogany Drop Leaf Dining Table
19th C Antique Centennial Chippendale Mahogany Drop Leaf Dining Table
Bay Colony Antiques is proud to offer for sale this exceptional 19th century antique Chippendale style Mahogany drop leaf dining table. This was likely made around the centennial celebration that reinvigorated an appreciation of 18th century designs & increased the demand for “traditional” furniture that was popular in the preceding century. This is an antique reproduction of a Newport table from the Goddard & Townsend families.
Superb cuts of Mahogany were used for the top with a beautiful wavy grain with dark striations that give the color depth. These dark striations are caused by mineral deposits from the soil and the Mahogany’s oil density gives the wood it’s signature sheen. The leaves hang about half way down the leg and have rounded edges with pinched corners. The leaves are supported by a traveling gate leg on each side that actuate as intended. The cabriolet legs are well-balanced and they terminate with carved ball & claw feet. The ball is well pronounced & the talon carvings are detailed & crisp. The carver did a phenomenal job and you really get the sense that there’s a powerful grip on the ball because of how life like the carvings are. The table is in great condition with our only notes being minor surface wear but nothing that would warrant a refinishing in our opinion. Had the table been made ~100 years earlier it would easily sell for about 100k at an important American furniture sale. We’re excited to offer our clients the ability to furnish their home with a one off copy of a nearly unobtainable early American masterpiece at an extreme fraction of the cost. When closed the table measures 47 3/4” wide x 17 3/4” deep x 27 7/8” tall. When the leaves are locked up the top measures 47 3/4” wide x 48” deep.
