Bay colony Antiques is proud to offer for sale this fantastic 18th Century Antique Connecticut Queen Anne Cherry tilt top table. A fashionable luxury in 18th century homes, these tables were commonly used for tea service, games, or social gatherings. Their tilting tops allow for easy storage when not in use making them a practical item for smaller rooms found in many 18th century homes. This table was made in Connecticut, likely Hartford County, during the third quarter of the 18th century & remains in remarkable condition with all of its original charm and splendor. Many surviving examples have repairs to their cabriole legs from being stepped on at some point in their 250+ year old life. It’s generally not a deal breaker for us & just something that comes with the territory of collecting these types of tables, but it is always refreshing to find bases like this one without any breaks or repairs present despite over two and a half centuries of use.
The table has a square top with a serpentine edge, secured to the pedestal with a square mortise and tenon. In its horizontal position the top is locked in place with a brass catch. The pedestal showcases a tapered columnar form with urn and ringlet turnings at the base, resting on three finely formed cabriolet legs that terminate in a snake foot. A subtle yet elegant detail is the cupid’s bow carvings at the base of the pedestal. They’re easy to overlook so we wanted to make a note of it. Each leg is dovetailed into the column and was further reinforced with a brass plate nailed to the underside of the pedestal. When flipped up like in our first image the table measures 41 1/2” wide x 24” deep x 51” tall. When the top is locked down in the horizontal position the table is 27 1/2” tall and measures 41 1/2” wide x 41 1/2” deep when measured from point to point.
