18th C Pair of Antique Irish Chippendale Chairs - Irish Phoenix W/ Ball & Claw
Bay Colony Antiques is proud to offer for sale this wonderful pair of 18th century antique Mahogany Irish Chippendale chairs. The chairs have masterfully carved ball & claw feet with well defined talons & knuckles. Their grip on the ball conveys a sense of power and they look incredibly realistic. The knees have carved Acanthus leaves with c scrolls and punch carvings. The seat box has a molded profile with a carved shell at the center of the apron. The needlepoint seats are very old, possibly original, with a Rose at full bloom amid an ivory field with an Acanthus leaf border with maroon accents. The chairs have pierced splats with an interlaced design & scrolled ears with a small carved flower at the bottom center of the splat. The crests have carved ears with opposing phoenixes at the center above a sunburst carving. Irish Phoenixes, or Augureys, are usually depicted very similar to these with a long slender body & sharp beak. The chairs are in very good condition for their age with our only notes being a slight color variation between the two chairs & old restorations to the feet. The chairs measure 24 1/2” wide x 23” deep x 40 1/2” tall with an 18” seat height.
