Before his name became synonymous with the highest tier cabinet makers, McIntire was predominantly an architect / housewright. Salem, a major New England port city, has fantastic history dating back to the early 17th century. Salem is credited with being the home of America's first millionaire, Elias Hasket Derby. Derby commissioned McIntire on a series of renovations for Derby's family. McIntire's high federal style and understanding of ideal proportions quickly set him apart from other local artisans and attracted the attention of Salem's elite. This is a mcIntire school piece most likely made by one of his contemporaries or journeymen. If this were by McIntire's hand it would be even that much more impressive in the design and carving. That being said, it's one tier off from a masterpiece by one of America's most highly collectible disciplines of cabinet making. McIntire tables regularly realize mid 5 figures when they do surface and are quickly snapped up by premier collectors and private institutions.
This game table is crafted from high grade imported Caribbean mahogany. The table exhibits remarkable scale and grace defined by it's ovolo top, rope carved legs, rope carved skirt molding, carved central McIntire school basket of fruit, carved floral corner blocks, & salem punched stars. To any serious New England collector this table would be a prized addition to any important collection. The brass hinges that support the top hold true & the top is supported by a rear swinging gate leg. The table is masterfully designed with conmplex convex sides and a serpentine front. We truly love the finer points of American furniture and this piece is a case study of one of the highest tiers or Massachusetts cabinetry. This specimen is refreshingly pure and hasn't been monkeyed around with over the years. We've attached additional construction photos of the underside and would be happy to furnish you with any additional you may require. The table measures 36" wide x 17 1/2" deep x 28" tall.
