18TH C ANTIQUE QUEEN ANNE TIGER MAPLE ROUNDABOUT / CORNER CHAIR W/ RUSH SEAT
With our highest compliments and utmost honors, Bay Colony Antiques is proud to bring to market this fantastic 18th century antique Queen Anne Tiger Maple corner / roundabout chair. We encounter a fair amount of early Queen Anne & Chippendale roundabout chairs but only purchase a select few each year. When this chair was made it wouldn’t have excited many people as they were traditionally crafted in Mahogany or Walnut with complex splats & either pad or ball & claw feet. This is a country made piece by a skilled cabinet maker who must have been familiar with the trendy new design but didn’t have the experience or a sufficient enough market to perfect it. The chair has a rush seat that’s completely useable and intact and features simple turnings on the legs with bulbous stretchers. We absolutely adore this chair and would recommend it without any hesitation to even the most discriminatory furniture collectors. When the chair was originally made this would have been a cheap alternative to one made in a formal cabinet making shop. Because so few were made like this and this chair is most likely one of a kind, the opposite is now true and this Tiger Maple example is considerably more valuable than it’s Mahogany or Walnut counterparts. With that being said, that doesn't hold true for all maple chairs in this style but this example is a cut above the rest with the nice turning patterns at the base & turned arm caps. The chair measures 29” wide arm to arm x 25” deep x 29 1/4” tall with a seat height of 18” tall.
