18TH CENTURY MUSEUM GRADE QUEEN ANNE PERIOD PHILADELPHIA WALNUT HIGHBOY CHEST
With our highest compliments and honors we're extremely proud to offer for sale this magnificent antique Queen Anne period Pennsylvania Walnut Highboy. We've had the pleasure of handling some truly breathtaking case furniture throughout our careers with countless study hours in private collections, institutions across the US, and other areas. We're extremely fond of 18th century Philadelphia furniture and consider it one of the highest disciplines of America's golden age of cabinetry.
We'll start with the condition, we've been over this chest with a fine tooth comb and can proudly say it's one of the sweetest, most pure examples we've encountered in quite some time. The upper case is all dovetail joined with a crisp balanced crown molding. The chest employs a five over 3 graduated drawer format with fantastic 18th century batwing brasses. The cabinet maker showcased his skills with exceptional usage of grain and proportions. The upper cavity has complete dustboards as traditional in PA cabinetry. The molded drawers are rich with tool and scribe marks and constructed with chamfered panels & hand cut dovetails. The lower section of the chest has a one over two format with a fantastic & dramatic scrolling pattern continued throughout the apron. The highboy stands on 4 cabriolet legs terminating in superior stockinged trifid feet. Stockinged trifid carvings are found on top tier Philadelphia furniture practiced by institutional level cabinet makers such as, Solomon Fussell, William Savery, John Elliot etc. Examining this chest and it's subtle complexities it's evident this was crafted in a superior shop by a master cabinet maker. We noticed when measuring this chest the edge of the foot, the widest part of the knee, and the mid molding are all the exact same width. These are the finer points of furniture and scale that adhere to ideal ratios and help certain items shine while others just plod along. We do have a 12 photo limit but would be happy to furnish you with any more you may desire. The chest measures 42" wide x 23" deep x 72 1/2" tall.
