Bay Colony Antiques is delighted to offer for sale this fantastic 18th century antique Queen Anne mahogany mirror. We’re always on the hunt for interesting 18th century mirrors but have been having some trouble finding mirrors without damage lately. We recently purchased a large collection of 19th century mirrors but haven’t found many we liked and the ones we have found were purchased quickly. The mirror retains it’s original glass with desirable signs of age and an attractive gesso carved border with gold leaf. The crest and the bottom both slightly curl inwards toward the wall. One time we shipped a gentleman a mirror and he called us saying it had somehow warped or bent in the mail. We explained to him that this is how they were formed and the curve made it a superior mirror. We all shared a good laugh and I think we’ll always remember that one. This is an early mirror with a fantastic gilt wood crest with two closed tulip bulbs at the top & a wonderful plant motif at the center bursting with life. Mirrors in the 18th century were a luxury item and were quite expensive due to the glass making process. These mirrors were not mass produced and the decoration is likely one of a kind. The mirror measures 14” wide x 34” tall x 1 1/4” deep. The glass alone measures 11 1/2” wide x 19” tall.
