18TH CENTURY ANTIQUE GRAIN PAINTED DOME TOP TRUNK / BOX
Thank you for shopping with Bay Colony Antiques. We're a third generation family owned business furnishing homes all over the world. We aggressively pursue important antiques, decorative arts, and objects of interest for our most discerning clients.
With our highest compliments we're pleased to offer for sale this wonderful 18th century Queen Anne period Hudson River Valley grain painted blanket box. This is a really fun, true, well thought out grain painting over a fantastic domed blanket chest. The box features a dome top & all dovetail construction which can be seen through the painted surface. The box retains all of it's original integrity & charm with old riveted strap hinges, iron lock & hasp, most likely a later added escutcheon plate, & original iron side handles. The box retains remnants of old German cargo stickers from the company Norddeutscher Lloyd. NDL was a shipping company operating out of Bremen with this cargo's destination being Baltimore. The grain painting is designed to mimic an expensive veneer that wouldn't be readily available outside of a large trade city. The grain painting is layed out in a book matched design with a sequential cut pattern.
In a sophisticated cabinet shop pre planned designs are executed and it's not uncommon to see identical objects from the same maker. That's one of our favorite thing when dealing with country primitives. Every piece is unique and tells a story. We've been busy handling estates all up and down the east coast. We have access to the finest antiques brought to market and choose to be very selective in our offerings. We could easily send this to a New England auction house and be handsomely paid but we want the best being offered to only OUR clients and proud to do so. We meet wonderful collectors every day as we furnish homes across the US. This is without a doubt one of the best Hudson River Valley painted blanket boxes we've had in quite some time. The chest measures 42" wide x 19" deep x 22" tall.
