18TH C ANTIQUE FEDERAL PERIOD SNYDER COUNTY PENNSYLVANIA GRAIN PAINTED BOX
18TH C ANTIQUE FEDERAL PERIOD SNYDER COUNTY PENNSYLVANIA GRAIN PAINTED BOX
With our highest compliments and utmost honors, Bay Colony Antiques is extremely proud to bring to market this fantastic 18th century antique Federal period grain painted blanket box. The painted surface is absolutely delightful. Decorated surfaces have long been practiced in cabinetmaking. Early pigments were created with various earthen elements like vermilion, iron oxide, and lead. Making the pigments was a laborious and dangerous task for early artisans of the period. This rare painted grain surface is exceptionally well done by a talented and practiced hand and was likely created with a yellow Ochre or a mustard paint. Painted furniture from Snyder County is extremely collectible and we absolutely adore this box much more than the later painted stencil works. The box is in fantastic condition considering it’s age with our only notes being a few stable age splits, the lock has been removed, the hasp has been replaced, and the hinges were moved and reset properly. The chest measures 34 3/4” wide x 17 1/4” deep x 22 1/4” tall. When the lid is fully open the height is 38 1/2” tall.
