18TH CENTURY ANTIQUE MAHOGANY FEDERAL PERIOD LIFT TOP SIDEBOARD / SERVER WITH RARE BUTTERFLY & FLORAL INLAYS ~ CA 1790/1800

Thank you for shopping with Bay Colony Antiques. We're a third generation family owned business furnishing homes all over the world. We aggressively pursue important antiques, decorative arts, and objects of interest for our most discerning clients.

With our highest compliments and honors were extremely proud to offer for sale this unique & rare 18th century antique Federal period mahogany inlaid sideboard. After the Revolutionary War was won American cabinet makers sought to distance themselves from the traditional English Queen Anne & Chippendale styles in favor of a new uniquely American design. George Hepplewhite's, Thomas Sheraton's, & Robert Adam's design catalogs could be ordered from England and the amalgam of these styles define the American Federal period. The sideboard is well constructed with recessed panel sides, hand cut dovetail drawers w/ scribe marks present, tall slender ogee feet, raised gallery, reeded columns, & wonderful inlay work. This is a substantial piece of case furniture measuring 69 1/2" wide x 23" deep x 48 1/2" tall. There's a nice visual effect between the mahogany & string inlays with an impressive inlaid butterfly at the center flanked by holly inlays on either side. The reed carved columns are interrupted with variegated wood ribbon inlays & transition to a neo-classical urn with flame finials at the top & an exceptional vase with flowers at the base panels. 18th & 19th century cabinetmakers would hand cut their inlay and dip the pieces into superheated sand to give it that burned black effect. The drawers retain their original brass hardware & are further enhanced with cock bead molded faces & brass escutcheons. One thing we wanted to note is the drawer faces are crafted from sequential cuts of mahogany. The grain carries over to the next face flawlessly & this attention to detail is often missed but was commonplace for a master cabinet maker. The sideboard has a very unique lift top with an inner cavity above the top drawers behind the inlaid panel. The cavity measures 66" wide x 19" deep x 4 1/2" tall.
