18TH CENTURY ANTIQUE CHIPPENDALE TIGER MAPLE MASSACHUSETTS OXBOW SLANT LID SECRETARY DESK ~ GOVERNOR WINTHROP WRITING DESK

Thank you for shopping with Bay Colony Antiques. We're a third generation family owned business furnishing homes all over the world. We aggressively pursue important antiques, decorative arts, and objects of interest for our most discerning clients.

With our highest compliments and utmost honors Bay Colony Antiques is proud to offer for sale this exceptional 18th century antique Massachusetts Tiger Maple slant lid desk. The desk has a nice bracket base and wonderful oxbow drawer fronts. The desk has pine secondaries with hand chamfered bottoms, dovetailed drawers, dovetailed case, & is rich with old tool & scribe marks. This is without a doubt one of the best early Massachusetts desks we’ve encountered in years. The desk has nice ziggurat formed brasses that contour to the swelled drawer fronts. The desk has an impressive amphitheater interior with a total of 13 drawers. The two half columns at the center of the desk can be pulled out and are used to store envelopes and other stationery. The top center drawer has a concave tombstone form & is decorated with an exceptionally rare carved geometric & floral rosette. The entire prospect section housing the four center drawers can be pulled out to reveal three hidden interior drawers. This feature is rare on formal Boston mahogany desks & even more so on a tiger maple desk such as this one. The oxbow form was almost exclusively practiced in Boston & surrounding communities with only a few other individuals scattered across New England also creating oxbow furniture. We know this isn't a Bliss or Chapin piece from our area and believe this was made in South Eastern MA around Duxbury, Scituate, Plymouth etc.. The desk measures 40 1/2” wide x 21” deep x 43 1/2” tall.
