18th C Antique Chippendale Pennsylvania Cherry Bachelor Chest W/ Carved Columns
Bay Colony Antiques is extremely proud to offer for sale this phenomenal 18th century antique Chippendale Cherry four drawer bachelors chest. This is without a doubt one of the most stunning & unusual chests we’ve ever handled. We’ve scrutinized our reference material and have found similar chests but nothing quite like it. This is to our knowledge a singular object and we’re beyond excited to offer this to our clients around the world. There’s a similar triple chest in the Philadelphia Museum (item no. 1932-45-101) that could be related.
The chest was made from beautiful cuts of figured Cherry with the most select pieces with the most interesting grain reserved for the faces. The drawers have molded edges and are fitted with etched brass hardware similar to the aforementioned chest in the Philadelphia Museum. There’s a small repair to the top right corner of the 1st & 4th drawer that were very well done but we wanted to point them out anyway. The backboards & feet have been replaced but whoever did the maintenance on the chest was extremely talented and performed a museum grade restoration. The drawers are flanked by carved quarter columns and all of the drawers actuate with ease and retain their original locks. The chest was likely made in Pennsylvania, but we wouldn’t be surprised if further research shows it was made in one of the surrounding Mid-Atlantic states. The chest is in wonderful condition and measures 38 1/2” wide x 22 1/8” deep x 43 3/4” tall.
