With our highest compliments and utmost honors Bay Colony Antiques is proud to bring to market one of the best 18th century antique sofa tables to surface in years. The tables is crafted from mahogany and is all peg joined with hand chamfered drawer bottoms and dovetailed drawer faces. The table has an impressive single board, solid mahogany top that can be flipped open to give access to the drawer and interior compartment. In the 18th & 19th century a slab of mahogany of this quality was very expensive, second only to rosewood. Caribbean Mahogany is the best in the world with unique mineral deposits and oil density that give it its signature sheen. Caribbean Mahogany was farmed to near extinction levels and thankfully the few forest that remain today are protected. When purchasing modern mahogany furniture you’re getting a different species in the same genus as mahogany but they’re worlds apart. Honduran & West Indian Mahogany are native to parts of Mexico, Central America, and island like Cuba, Jamaica, Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic, etc.. The table is in good condition considering it’s age with our only notes being minor surface scratches and a repair below the drawer box. The repair is old and we chose to leave it alone but if our end client wants the screws removed we’d be happy to have our restorer take them out and properly fill the screw holes. The table measures 21 3/4” wide x 35 1/2” long x 28 1/4” tall. When the top is flipped open the height is 46 1/2” tall.
