18TH CENTURY ANTIQUE MAHOGANY CHIPPENDALE PERIOD SLANT LID SECRETARY DESK

With our highest compliments & honors we're extremely proud to offer for sale this wonderful 18th century antique English Chippendale slant lid desk. This is crafted from old growth Caribbean mahogany, one of the most desirable imported timbers of the 18th century. The best grades of mahogany found their way to European & colonial American cabinet making shops where it was highly coveted by the artisans. In the 18th & 19th century Mahogany was the most expensive lumber right behind rosewood. Caribbean mahogany contains rich mineral & oil deposits that give this now farmed to extinction hardwood it's signature sheen. The desk has wonderful single board sides & stands tall on a nicely formed bracket base. The base features a series of 4 graduated drawers with original brass hardware, all dovetail construction & original locks & escutcheons. We will simply pass on a desk if it doesn't retain it's original integrity. We demand only the best for our clients so if a desk has significant repairs, or a swapped lid, or a new base we don't want to and won't offer it to our clients. What really defines this desk as something special is the quality & sophistication of the interior. The desk features a two over four split interior with hidden pull out letter drawers behind the carved columns & a center valence door. We purchased this from an upstate New Hampshire estate where it descended in the family the last three generations. The desk measures 37" wide x 20 3/4" deep x 40 1/4" tall. When the lid is flipped open the height to the lid is 29" which will comfortably fit most desk chairs.
