We're delighted to offer for sale this wonderful 19th century colored lithograph titled "LE RETOUR DE L'ILE D'ELBE". The scene is Napoleons return from the island of Elba. With the treaty of Fontainebleau in 1814 Napoleon was forced to abdicate the throne and is forced to exile on a Mediterranean island called Elba off the coast of Italy. What would one of histories greatest leaders do on an island of ~ 10,000 people after ruling the French Empire? Well, lead of course. Hes credited for helping stabilize the island and advancing infrastructure, agriculture, and much more to the isolated Mediterranean island. In 1815 Napoleon sailed back to Paris and was honored by his people. This began his 100 day period leading to his defeat at Waterloo. This print is in great condition with only minimal oxidation and creasing. The scene shows Napoleon arriving at port with clipper ships and his men under the French flag and iconic eagle finial to a welcoming crowd of affluent people. The print is 24 1/2" x 18".
