Rosewood has long been used as a decorative \/ elusive hardwood in cabinet making by many well renowned Victorian cabinet makers. The finest rosewood in the late 19th century was being imported from Brazil, Jamaica, and Honduras. Given the long and tumultuous journey the raw lumber had to endure, rosewood was highly coveted by cabinet makers and would fetch a steep sum at port when stockpiles were available. With the demand highly exceeding the supply a rosewood parlor table quickly became a status symbol of families of the late 19th century. Demand further expanded and protectionist measures were enacted to curb the damaging effects of the timber trade. Rosewood of this quality is simply not available in today's market!\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv\u003eWe believe this table was made in NYC. Examining the scarcity of the wood we concluded this was made in or close to a major port city. NYC had fabulous cabinet makers working in the same area and style with families who had the means to comission a table of such quality. The table box is carved with acanthus leaves surrounding the entire skirt and impressive carvings. The cabriolet legs show good proportions and are further embellished with additional acanthus carvings. The molded edge of the horizontal base stretcher is a nice little touch showing care in the most minutia of details. The marble top is 100% correct and free of flaws. The Eastlake furniture movement took a step back from the powerful high relief carvings, classical motiffs and high ornamentation that dominated the Victorian era. The eastlake movement is highlighted with it's use of geometric designs, strong rectilinear lines, shallower incised carvings and can be credited as a transition from High Victorian to the Art Nouveau\/ Arts \u0026amp; Crafts\/ Mission styles which would come into fashion in the near future.\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv\u003eThe base emplors a nice contrast of walnut and ebonized woods accented with numerous incised carvings of geometric and floral designs finished with a gilt paint. The work surface is a nice slab of purple\/red granite a favorite among cabinet makers of this time. Granite is found all over the world and in a plethora of colors depending on where it was mined and what was abundant in the area. When granite is found with pigmentation from purple to red it's from a potassium rich region. The vertical stiles flanking the mirror are reed carved leading to an ebonzied plinth and carved half columns. The glass is absolutely wonderful and further embellished with an acid etched design on the gilt mirror liner. The crest is pierce carved with star designs and decorated with bulbous turnings. We absolutely love everything going on in the crest of this hall tree. This example is fitted with a mirrored bottom and three cut glass shelves. The beveled glass sides (side lights) are a very nice addition to the recessed panel sides. The gallery employs a nice rounded beveled glass mirror amid acanthus leaf and a central shell carving. The gallery sides are scrolled and triple incised carved. When all the design elements come together it makes a truly exceptional oak medical cabinet with all the bells and whistles. We see these in a varying degree of complexity and this one is a 10\/10. We chose to include our natural light photos along with our professionally done ones. We didn't want the beauty of the glass to be lost in translation.
