The mirror has an exceptional Prince of Whales carved crest and gadrooned carved frame. The interior of the frame has a bead and sausage decoration and the corners of the frame are adorned with acanthus leaves. This mirror has a replaced glass panel and has been regilded. It is truly difficult to regionalize which side of state's boarder its comes from but it is unquestionably made by a cabinet maker trained in the McIntire discipline. Employing the well defined signature punching and swag leaf carved panels. The columns are further defined in very intricate spool turnings. The chest is mainly constructed out of wavy birch (\"Maine Mahogany\") with crotched mahogany veneered cock beaded molded drawer facings. It is wonderfully accented by its original back gallery with turned rosettes. Possessing all of its original hand chamfered pine secondary panels it has all its locks and original wooden knobs pulls. Most of these were later rebrassed as imported English brasses that became available again to the trading port of Salem Mass. We note an old dowel re-enforcement to the back left leg \u0026amp; that is it. It is clean with nice drawer actions always having been loved \u0026amp; cherished. Each drawer is decorated with fine brass pulls with an embossed pineapple centered amid the backplate. Cross banded inlay, a cock bead molded face, and a fruitwood string inlay further embellish this handsome desk. The interior drop hinges hold strong and true. The interior is fitted with a 2 over 4 format with a lone center drawer. The vertical stiles are decorated with elongated figured tombstone panels and the sides feature paneled cherry sides.\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv\u003e\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv\u003eWe have the priveledge to handle and study countless objects in institutions and collections across the country. This desk is very special sophisticated example of high end cabinetry in the river valley. We believe this chest was made in or around Springfield, Massachusetts CA 1810 probably by the hand of the highest shops in the area possibly Pelatiah Bliss or William LLoyd's work. Cherry wood was abundant in the area and the close proximity to Boston and trade cities along the Connecticut River explains the scarce yet highly desirable mahogany veneers being used in the area. We're very partial to rare and unusual desks made outside of major metropolitan cities. The major cabinet making cities we're very prolific where a smaller western MA shop would create a fraction of the commissioned work a NYC or Boston shop would. This desk is 42 1\/4\" wide x 21 1\/2\" deep x 43\" tall. When the writing surface is flipped down the work surface height is 32\" tall. This desk is in its correct and true original surface with only the most minute condition flaws. We note the second drawer is missing it's interior lock and a very small veneer shrinkage on the butlers drawer wholly age appropriate with the exotic 200+ year old wood in a foreign climate. A sugar chest is always a staple of southern US furniture collectors. When we're lucky enough to procure one they're usually snapped up very quickly. Spices and other valuables were revered and kept locked tight in a chest such as this. This chest is made of old growth southern walnut with tulip poplar secondaries, a species abundant in the southern US. This is all pegged construction with recessed paneled sides, a molded top, and decorative fruit wood escutcheon inlay. The drawer bottoms are hand chamfered poplar exactly what you'd expect to see from this region and time. The hand cut dovetailed drawers retain their original iron locks. This did not come to us with a key however most locksmiths can easily cut antique keys. The paneled swinging door had the lock removed and plugged in the correct fashion. The chest stands 21\" tall on spool feet, measures 28 3\/4\" wide x 13 1\/2\" deep. Irving and Casson began their partnership in 1874 advertising advanced cabinetry work in the earlier 18th and 19th century style. Their early work was mostly interior finishes in a high style and later toward case pieces. This table has a shaped and molded top of rich Caribbean Mahogany. The turned pedestal shows grace and intent with a true understanding of fine cabinetry. The table stands on a 3 footed spider leg base with the makers tag located under the pedestal. This stand is in wonderful condition and was clearly well cared for. We view Irving and Casson as the last true advanced Boston furniture shops. The table is 19\" wide x 17\" deep at the base. When the table top is locked down with the crab lock the table is 25 1\/4\" tall. Early American furniture is our true passion. Our family is from Boston with our favorite furniture coming from Boston, the North Shore, and Philadelphia. We spend countless hours across the US intimately studying the finest furniture in public and private collections. We strongly feel this is a Massachusetts table with a special emphasis to Salem, MA \/ North Shore. By the early 19th century there were over 100 cabinet makers active in Salem. Being a major port city with a close proximity to Boston great wealth was made in the area. This table is made from the absolute best grade and most select cuts of flame mahogany. Early 19th century mahogany has special properties \u0026amp; oil density giving it a lustrous sheen modern \"mahogany\" can't imitate. The Mahogany trade flourished in major cities with rosewood being the only other imported wood demanding a higher price. Caribbean mahogany was farmed to near extinction levels and is thankfully protected today.\u003cbr\u003e This stand has cross banded mahogany moldings surrounding the entire top for a nice visual effect. The stand has two drawers with fine hand cut dovetail construction with the upper drawer retaining the original lock. Each drawer is fitted with the original brass escutcheon and the best basket of fruit brass pulls. We originally thought these had to be reproduction hardware. We took one off it was fitted with period brass nuts on hand cut brass posts. The finish behind the brass was unoxidized and darker showing if not original these have been on there for a long long time. The drawer faces were never re drilled and there is no evidence of these being replaced. We've had to buy reproduction hardware and can assure you nothing like this of this quality is available in any market. We considered offering the brasses only but that thought was gone in an instant we wouldn't want to disturb the purity and integrity of the stand. This stand is finished on all four sides and is in wonderful condition. We note a few small seasoning splits on the side. We make no excuses for this, it's stable and at no risk of splitting further just a side effect of having an exotic wood in a different climate for 200+ years. The stand has four turned drop finials and stands atop a generous carved base. The base has 4 carved lion paws very finely executed in great condition with no breaks or repair to the toes. We noted a small repair on the back bottom of the pedestal. It was done very well and is hardly an issue but we point it out as part of our full disclosure policy. The repair was further strengthened with a later added very costly steel spider at the last owners mother expense. At some point in the tables life the top was re worked. We imagine the original split beyond fixing but the new one is so well done we couldn't tell until we looked at the underside. The stand has four brass caster wheels that roll with ease. Exceptionally well done and proportioned this stand has fully formed classical columns and a very crisp balanced gadrooned edge. The drawer faces are molded with the original glass pulls. The carved pedestal base is an absolute 10\/10. The base features tight ringlet turnings transferring to a heavily carved masterfully done acanthus leaf base with bead carvings and a surrounding acanthus base medallion. The carved griffin paw feet are exceptionally well executed on the top tier of the practice. The paneled tiger maple doors open to reveal four sliding interior dressing drawers. From an extraordinary Hudson Valley collectors estate this chest is clean as a whistle. This was expertly refinished and french polished in the last twenty years. It commands a 10\/10 for condition. The mahogany vertical stiles are ringlet carved with an upper acanthus carving below the turret corners. This cabinet employs the best use of grain with ultra choice tiger maple stock usually reserved for instrument making.
