The piece is coming up on 300 years old and pieces don't get this age without some issues and attention being paid to them. One other issue worthy of mention: at some point a previous owner had installed probably brass finials with threaded rods on the tops of the uprights. We are offering it the way it is. It employs the typically unique overbuilt construction of Queen Anne period case pieces from these regions of Pa. It has a very nicely fitted Nine drawer interior, exceptionally well carved tombstone door, original lock, carved quarter columns and pronounced crown. We note (and this has gotten past numerous experts) it possesses an expertly restored ogee bracket footed base. Almost every true Spice Chest we have encountered has this same restoration. These are 50 pound chests standing on relatively delicate legs that simply came off \u0026amp; lost over the last 275 years. Note the last 2 sold by Skinners in Massachusetts each realizing over $20,000 in recent history with an additional 25 % buyers premium on top of that base sale price. We obtained this through a Harrisburg area collector in a trade for some key items from our private collection. Many would argue its too powerful for eBay \u0026amp; we disagree having met some incredibly knowledgeable collectors right here. These days every major antique operation is selling via internet based platforms. Instead of using several for our own internet based offerings we focus our attention right here where each buyer \u0026amp; sellers enjoys a real sense of security. The party we obtained this form paid $50,000 for it in the late 1970's. As we are all painfully aware our currency no longer retains anywhere near that value. This individual purchased it through the Bradford family and it was found in one of their properties barns Circa 1910 located at Camp Hill. It was restored then and the work is a century old. Other than that we noted a tiny almost invisible splice on the top of the front edge of the lase. Its approximately 1\/8' on an inch in thickness. The chest was no doubt knocked over in its century stay in a barn and the crest took a small ding that was addressed. We are now its 3rd owner since it was unearthed. The case is entirely dovetailed joined. It employs poplar secondary woods. Everything else is correct and original. In its center drawer it is inscribed \"AA \u0026amp; JA\" on each sides of that drawer. We will be delighted to document its provenance as we have received it. We sold several 100 items of the Bradford family collection about 3 years ago through our auction sales. We mention this as our compass of certainty as to its real history. Any true spice chest of this tier still realizes over 20k in the correct auction sale setting. We have put a true far below market valued price on this chest representing our investment in the items we exchanged it for. Henkel Harris became a prolific company and continues to produce fine home furnishing. These chairs have a compass formed seat box decorated with crotch mahogany. The fabric is a tasteful black with a pleasing geometric pattern with a yellow \/ gold diamond design. The set has 12 chairs total, 10 side chairs \u0026amp; 2 arm chairs. Every chair has a beautiful mahogany splat with exceptional mahogany grain pattern and a rolled crest on the top of the chairs. The chairs have front cabriolet legs terminating in pad feet and the arm chairs have fantastically formed rolled arms. The entire set was cherished for many years and in exceptionally clean condition. The seats are free from odors, rips, and stains. Henkel Harris became a prolific company and continues to produce fine home furnishing. These chairs have a compass formed seat box decorated with crotch mahogany. The fabric is a tasteful black with a pleasing geometric pattern with a yellow \/ gold diamond design. The set has 12 chairs total, 10 side chairs \u0026amp; 2 arm chairs. Every chair has a beautiful mahogany splat with exceptional mahogany grain pattern and a carved and rolled crest on the top of the chairs. Every day we see the price of native lumbers skyrocketing. The demand for beer \/ whiskey barrels has made American White oak nearly triple in price. Black walnut has always commanded a steep price. When a Black Walnut tree reaches full maturity it can grow over 100 feet with a 3-4 foot diameter and be sold for upwards of 20k. The wood is highly coveted for cabinet making, instrument making, gun stocks, and other goods. This set has a very attractive vasiform splat with a shaped crest. Our photo series came out a little dark but the truest color can be seen on the single and double chair photos. The finish is exceptionally clean and is a nice warm classic walnut brown. The chairs are branded with the Henkel Harris Virginia Galleries logo underneath the molded seat box. The scalloped apron draws your eye to the magnificent needle point seats on this set. The needlepoint shows a pink flower amid a cream colored field with additional earthen theme decoration. The seat box is further decorated with a charming braided trim featuring the major colors present in the seat. If you've been looking for a great set of 6 these are absolutely the ones to own. The arm chairs are 23 1\/2\" wide x 20\" deep x 38 1\/2\" tall. We believe this was originally an applewood secretary top of great scale. The previous owner's family has used this as a free standing jelly cupboard \/ cabinet the last 3 generations ~150 years. We strongly feel this is a Hartford county Connecticut cabinet but to heir to caution we'll call it New England. We lament we didn't get to see the entire secretary as a whole. We can imagine how massive and stately it would have been. This would without a doubt be locked away in a museum or historical society were it whole. This cabinet is a fantastic example of early joinery techniques. The case has wonderful hand cut dovetails along the crown and the base. The tombstone paneled doors are quite sophisticated and executed exceptionally well by an early American country cabinet maker. The cabinet is further decorated with fruit wood escutcheons and carved vertical stiles a rare CT embellishment. The cabinet is in it's original red wash finish undisturbed aside from being cleaned. We note the hinges were replaced. The lower door retains the old iron lock. Irving and Casson began their partnership in 1874 advertising advanced cabinetry work in the earlier 18th and 19th century style. Their early work was mostly interior finishes in a high style and later toward case pieces. This table has a shaped and molded top of rich Caribbean Mahogany. The turned pedestal shows grace and intent with a true understanding of fine cabinetry. The table stands on a 3 footed spider leg base with the makers tag located under the pedestal. This stand is in wonderful condition and was clearly well cared for. We view Irving and Casson as the last true advanced Boston furniture shops. The table is 19\" wide x 17\" deep at the base. When the table top is locked down with the crab lock the table is 25 1\/4\" tall.
