With our highest compliments and utmost honors, Bay Colony Antiques is proud to offer for sale this exceptional early 19th century antique Vermont Federal period chest of drawers / dresser. The chest is very well made and is absolutely stunning. The Birds Eye Maple used for the faces & columns is of the highest quality with an extremely bold figuring. The transitions and sides are made of Cherry which was abundant in the region and was durable, easy to work, and it finished well. The chest has large single panel sides and there’s some great figuring in Cherry boards above & below each panel. The chest has a practical 2 over 4 layout with an extra large top drawer and 3 below. The knobs are hand painted and the drawers retain their original locks & escutcheons. Pine was used for the secondary wood and the drawers have an impressive set of hand cut dovetails that’ve held up tight over the years. Mahogany wasn’t always available to Vermont cabinet makers and when it did reach the state it was generally more expensive because it would have traded hands a couple of times. The people of Vermont found other ways to spruce up their home & give it a high style feel. In addition to producing some of the best Early American Maple furniture in the world Vermont is also celebrated for their unique & masterful grain painting that developed from the same necessity. This is without a doubt one of our favorite New England Chests that we've encountered in some time and look forward to finding a nice home for it. The chest is in wonderful condition with our only notes being minor surface wear & a couple of well-done veneer repairs to the right column. The chest measures 46” wide x 20 3/4” deep x 54” tall.
