Bay Colony Antiques is proud to bring to market this exceptional 19th century antique Mahogany Duncan Phyfe sewing stand / work table. Duncan Phyfe was a master cabinet maker working in New York City and developed an individual neoclassical style with his own original sketches and furniture designs. The work table has two standard drawers and one sow belly drawer with an old silk brocade fabric on it. The silk is a light green with pink and blue flowers and thistles made from gold thread. The large bottom drawer was meant to hold fabrics & projects the ladies of the house would be working on. Sewing was a invaluable skill and was a big part of daily life in 18th & 19th century homes. The drawers have cock bead molded faces and bone escutcheons and all retain their original locks. The sides of the table have an applied molding in a geometric pattern and the back of the stand has simulated drawer faces. The stand has a lyre shaped support that’s joined to the base with an old iron bolt and it is still nice and sturdy after all these years. The base has a tight spool carving around the edge and a cross banded inlay above the spool carvings. The saber legs are finely formed and have brass lion paw feet and carved acanthus leaves at the top with fantastic carved floral rosettes on each side. This is without a doubt one of the finest New York work tables that we’ve encountered in some time and are excited to offer this to our clients around the world. The stand is in very good condition with our only notes being a couple of old veneer repairs at the base and an old age split on the back of the table. The table measures 25” wide x 15 3/4” deep x 28” tall.
