It is truly difficult to regionalize which side of state's boarder its comes from but it is unquestionably made by a cabinet maker trained in the McIntire discipline. Employing the well defined signature punching and swag leaf carved panels. The columns are further defined in very intricate spool turnings. The chest is mainly constructed out of wavy birch (\"Maine Mahogany\") with crotched mahogany veneered cock beaded molded drawer facings. It is wonderfully accented by its original back gallery with turned rosettes. Possessing all of its original hand chamfered pine secondary panels it has all its locks and original wooden knobs pulls. Most of these were later rebrassed as imported English brasses that became available again to the trading port of Salem Mass. We note an old dowel re-enforcement to the back left leg \u0026amp; that is it. It is clean with nice drawer actions always having been loved \u0026amp; cherished. Baker furniture company began in the late 19th century in Grand Rapids alongside many other popular furniture makers. The area was richly wooded and commonly referred to as \"Furniture City\" with the emergence of the many shops. The founder, Siebe Baker, created his first desk in 1893 and the company steadily flourished into the industry staple it is today. A classic 18th century design, bombe chest of drawers are highly desirable and also referred to as kettle form chests. The bombe form is a true testament to a cabinet makers prowess and was practiced by the few elite cabinet makers who could pull it off. The form was especially popular in Boston, Philadelphia and throughout Europe. Baker furniture continues to produce some of the finest home furniture available today. Admittedly we don't spend much time in Baker show rooms but don't believe this production run is still available and still sold. This classic Chippendale design chest has wonderful proportions and has an attractive dramatic kettle swell. The dresser stands on 4 ball and claw carved cabriolet legs with a sophisticated scrolling pattern with a central carved shell on the skirt. The chest is decorated with 8 Chippendale brass pulls on the drawer faces with 4 escutcheon plates. This chest has additional bat wing brass campaign handles on both sides. The chest retains it's rose in crown Baker tag that helps date this inside the first drawer. This chest is in exceptional condition in a perfect wonderful red mahogany finish that simply glows. Period bombe furniture has become almost impossible to obtain with the few remaining examples rightfully placed in museums \u0026amp; institutions across the globe. An 18th century example like this would soar across the auction block and realize high 5 - low 6 figures. Thankfully Baker recreates timeless American treasures for more of us to enjoy. The unlikely trio was rather inexperienced in cabinet making but spent countless hours studying antiques they coveted so highly. They paid particular mind to the way these timeless treasures were crafted and finished and sought out to recreate the quality of Americas golden age of cabinetry. The name has become synonymous with quality and tradition. Henkel Harris furniture cost an exorbitant amount new from the showroom, this chest is in excellent condition and available for a fraction of it's original price.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis gorgeous chest on chest is crafted from select cuts of African \u0026amp; South American mahogany with exceptional usage of grain on the faces. The chest is signed style number 119 and finish number 29 on the paper tag on the back. The chest employs a two split drawer over 3 standard drawer upper format with a bottom format of one smaller drawer over two over sized. Every drawer face is nicely molded creating a visual effect that draws your attention to the mahogany grain. The chest has 14 heavy cast high quality brasses with stamped back plates. The chest is molded at the base and transition to a nicely formed bracket base with pleasing scrolling profiles. The dresser is further accented with a sophisticated mid molding and a molded edge on the mahogany top. We've been over the chest extensively and note a small restoration to one rear bracket foot that is nearly invisible. This is without a doubt one of the finest pieces of case furniture we've had the pleasure of offering for quite some time. This is a 19th century chest we believe was made around the centennial celebration. As the centennial celebration approached and was enjoyed there was a vast revisiting of arts \u0026amp; design from America's \"Golden Age\" 100 years prior. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThis chest is crafted from the most select cuts of tiger maple generally reserved for instrument making. We probably handle more tiger maple furniture than anybody in the country. We regularly have great custom and more modern tiger maple furniture in stock but 18th \u0026amp; 19th century case pieces are rare to say the least. Most times we have a client for these before they even get in the door but this is a rare time we get to offer this to all of our clients. If this were made slightly earlier we would have sent this off to any important early American sale where chests of this form regularly hammer down past 5 figures. This chest was probably made around 1810-1840. We've made sure to show all construction and the back and bottom. At the very latest this would be a centennial chest but we strongly feel this is early 19th century. We contemplated doing the same with this but after selling commissions we'd probably end up close to our asking costs. We want to continue to push the envelope with offering more investment grade antiques on this sales platform. We've met so many wonderful people here and try to reserve the absolute best for our personal clients. This is a classic Massachusetts form with a wonderfully executed serpentine front and molded overhung serpentine top. The chest has absolutely wonderful scrolling and cut out patterns along the base. The tiger maple used in this chest is top tier finished in a golden amber color. The drawers are constructed with hand cut dovetails and hand chamfered New England pine secondaries. Each drawer is decorated with Chippendale bat wing brasses and escutcheon plates. The top two drawers retain their original locks, the bottom two drawers never had locks. This chest is in such pristine condition with the only thing we can note being a small seasoning split on the top. This is stable and at no risk of spreading. The back and bottom are wonderful exactly what you'd expect to see. This slightly later example of an 18th century Massachusetts masterpiece is among our favorite new additions surely to find a new home quickly. This is a desirable 2 over 3 classic Boston format. Each drawer is decorated with herringbone inlay and cock bead molded faces. The hand cut brass teardrop pulls and escutcheon plates are old and correct. The base is admittedly our favorite component of this piece especially the tapered trumpet legs and the Gothic style cut outs further accented with cock bead molding. We note the mid molding has been replaced, it's very well done in the correct fashion. Remnants of the original paper liner can be seen on the top. Numerous similar examples can be seen in countless institutions across the US. The vertical columns flanking the front feature a magnificent bust of a woman in classical dress adorned with floral decorations. The chest features a molded top over a series of four graduated drawers all retaining their original escutcheons \u0026amp; locks. The chest has been re-brassed with appropriate style \u0026amp; age pulls from the previous owner. This chest is a wonderful example of PA cabinetry with hand cut dovetails, hand chamfered bottoms rich with tool marks \u0026amp; original support blocks intact. Sadly most of these on the market have significant repairs \u0026amp; alteration. This chest is nice \u0026amp; pure retaining it's original integrity \u0026amp; and a testament to the skills of the cabinet maker. The chest stands on 4 wonderfully formed flared french feet. The chest is crafted from a native figured cherry with the best cuts reserved for the drawer faces. The chest exhibits a desirable split drawer format over 5 full length graduated drawers. Each drawer actuated with ease and is constructed with hand cut dovetails and hand chamfered bottoms. The chest has dovetailed transitions and nice slightly flared French feet. This was clearly crafted by a top tier southern cabinet maker who likely had a long tenure in a busier eastern city and was familiar with novel cabinet making styles. Kentucky became the 15th US state in 1792 and mainly consisted of citizens of Virginia that moved west. Figured Cherry was a favorite among Kentucky cabinet makers as it was prevalent in the area and imported woods like mahogany wouldn’t often make it that far past major port cities. We'll be hard pressed to find another Kentucky chest on this tier. We purchased this along with a KY sugar chest that sold within a few hours of offering it for sale. The case mainly consists of a native cherry with solid tiger maple drawer faces. The chest retains its original escutcheons and turned pulls with carved half columns and tiger maple veneer along the top edge. This is a country made piece by a skilled cabinet maker who was likely familiar with novel cabinet making styles but didn’t have a sufficient market to perfect them. In an institutional level cabinet shop each piece was carefully drawn out and meticulously crafted to perfect standards and proportions. Country furniture can feel more intimate from little idiosyncrasies in the cabinet makers work and their make-do approach to certain obstacles. This cabinet maker likely didn’t have access to imported mahogany and opted for a nice contrasting decoration achieved with the dark cherry \u0026amp; warm tiger maple. The chest has been masterfully refinished in the perfect hue to showcase the impressive walnut and has received proper maintenance work on the drawers runners. The back of the chest reads “Refinished at the New Furniture Home of CA Strack and Son York, PA”. The Strack family played an important role in preserving American antiques and for this to have gone through their hands is just an added plus. Charles Strack, a German immigrant, settled in York in 1840 and was one of the town's first furniture dealers. We've attached a couple photos of old postcards showing the Strack properties in 1840 \u0026amp; another showing the New Furniture Home at about the turn of the 20th century. In the 1840 image, buildings 3, 4, \u0026amp; 5 belonged to the Stracks and were located on the corner of George \u0026amp; Philadelphia street where the York County Court is today. The New Furniture Home building is still standing and looks pretty much the same and is located on the corner of George \u0026amp; Princess street, only one block away from Penn Park. Most Pennsylvania tall chests like this that we encounter have taken a few repairs to the feet and drawer faces but we’re proud to say this chest is a 10\/10 on condition. We’ll be hard pressed to find another example this clean and will safely recommend this chest to even our most discriminatory clients. With respect to Sack's good, better, best grading system we’d place this as a “better” example. The craftsmanship and execution of the design is exceptionally well done but on a “best” example you’d hope to find some extra embellishments like carved columns or a more ambitious design to the feet. Pennsylvania collectors tend to favor ogee feet and flared French feet but we actually really do like this design, especially the spurs and protruding lobes near the bottom of the feet. The front spurs are slightly rounded out but that’s not uncommon on these roughly 250 year old chests. The drawers are nice and clean \u0026amp; free of odors and this chest can hold a considerable wardrobe.
