Bay Colony Antiques is proud to offer for sale this magnificent 18th century antique Pennsylvania Walnut Chippendale drop leaf dining table. Philadelphia Furniture and Philadelphia Chippendale in particular is one of the most iconic & desirable disciplines of American cabinet making. Philadelphia was home to some of the most celebrated American cabinet makers such as John Elliot, Benjamin Randolph, Thomas Affleck & William Savery. The table exhibits nice proportions & has a really nice scrolled out table box, cabriolet legs with shell carved knees, & superbly executed triffid carved feet. Trifid carved feet are a rare decoration popular in top tier Philadelphia cabinet shops. These Trifid feet are well balanced and have a lot of character with a shallow double curve between the toes & an elongated webbing running up to the ankle. The table has a dovetailed table box with a cupids bow cut out and the leaves are supported with a swinging gate leg on each end. The table has finely formed cabriolet legs with shell carvings at the knee and the table is nice and sturdy and has been well maintained over the years. The table is crafted from high grade American Walnut which was abundant in the region and easy to work with which made it a quick favorite among early cabinet makers. The table leaves can be opened and closed easily and have pinched corners that further enhance it's elegance & charm. The table is in great condition with our only notes being replaced hinges, minor surface wear & discolorations, and an old age split that was properly stabilized with a biscuit. The table measures 18" wide x 42" long x 28" tall. When the leaves are locked up the top measures 53 1/2" wide x 42" long.
