With our highest compliments and utmost honors, Bay Colony Antiques is proud to offer for sale this fantastic 19th century antique classical Mahogany petticoat table. This is a stunning piece of furniture made at the height of the American Classical period probably in New York but possibly Boston. Boston, Philadelphia, & New York were the epicenters of American classical design and New York City was slowly pulling ahead as the country's most innovative & prolific cabinet making city. New York City had a busy port where Mahogany could be readily purchased and also benefited from a large supply of skilled immigrant laborers and an increasingly wealthy populace who had the means to commission such pieces. The table is adorned with crotch Mahogany veneers on almost every surface and the table has aged very well. There are some old age splits at the base but that’s not uncommon to see with ~200 year old imported wood, especially over a dramatic curve. The table has a large mirror fitted into the base and an overhung marble top with a thumb molded edge. The glass is original to the table and has a desirable wavy or rippling effect that can be seen in our close up shot of the mirror. These are traditionally used in entryways, but this is a great size for a dining room server. The table measures 43” wide x 19” deep x 34 1/4” tall. The base measures 41” wide x 16 1/2” deep and the mirror measures 29 1/2” wide x 17 1/2” tall.
