With our highest compliments & utmost honors, Bay Colony Antiques is proud to offer for sale this exceptional 18th century antique Chippendale tilt top tea table with ball and claw feet. When the feet have 3 claws they’re referred to as talon feet and these are superbly executed with tons of character. The legs have a slender ankle and a rare stepped design at the knee sometimes referred to as an arch. This small embellishment is rarer than one would suspect and further helps regionalize the table with similar examples in the Philadelphia Museum made in Philadelphia from about 1750-1770. The Walnut selected for the table is absolutely stunning with an exceptionally rare quilting pattern that’s only found in a handful of trees. American Black Walnut was treasured by early American cabinet makers because of its excellent durability, workability, rich color, and interesting grain patterns. This was clearly made in a top tier cabinet shop and had the attention of an advanced carver. The table has a 3 board Walnut top in an old surface, likely original. The dish top is well pronounced and because the top is made from Walnut opposed to Mahogany, the tabletop has not warped at all. The table has a birdcage mechanism which allows the top to swivel and we do have the wedge we just forgot to install it for the photos. The tabletop has a 32 1/4” diameter and is 28 3/4” tall when flipped down like in our gallery image and 46 3/4” tall when the top is flipped up. The width at the base from claw to claw is 26” wide.
