With our deepest pride and greatest pleasure, Bay Colony Antiques is excited to present this exceptional 18th century York County Pennsylvania Chippendale chest of drawers to our clients around the world. We handle a considerable amount of York County case furniture year after year but can’t recall ever having a chest quite like this one. If we were asked to find this chest, or a comparable one, it would be an extremely difficult task, even with our tremendous volume. The chest was made from the best grade of American Black Walnut which was prevalent in Pennsylvania and was the most desirable domestic timber to 18th century cabinet makers. The chest possesses an extremely rare format with 5 graduated drawers with molded edges that are flanked by carved quarter columns on each side. The drawers have Tulip Poplar secondaries and were constructed with hand cut dovetails and hand chamfered panels. The chest has complete dust boards between each drawer which was commonplace in Pennsylvania cabinet making. The chest rests on 4 masterfully formed ogee bracket feet with a ton of character, most notably the elongated curling spurs. The chest is in very good condition with our only notes being minor surface wear, some dings on the feet, a couple of nails added to the feet, and an old age split towards the front edge of the top that is stable and not at risk of expanding. It can seem trivial pointing out these little flaws that most of our clients wouldn’t even bat an eye at, but it’s our policy to point out any little thing we note on our inspection no matter how small or insignificant they may be. The chest measures 41 1/2” wide x 21” deep x 41 1/2” tall.
