This 6 board blanket box is an absolute case study in early joinery techniques and is refreshingly unaltered. The chest retains it's original hand forged iron hasp and crab lock. The interior is fitted with a lift top candle till with two drawers below. The box is branded \"Frank R Conrad\" and \"Henry R Conrad\" on the interior. A convenient wooden shuttle can be used to prop open the molded lid for easier access. There's no evidence of snipe or strap hinges being in place on this early chest. We believe the old barrel hinges to be true and original with no evidence of them being moved. This chest is adorned with very handsome embossed ring pulls and heavy brass escutcheon plates. The drawers employ a molded edge design with hand hewed drawer bottoms rich with tool marks.\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv\u003eThe painted surface is absolutely delightful. Decorated surfaces have long been practiced in cabinetmaking. Early pigments were created with various earthen elements like vermilion, iron oxide, and lead. Making the pigments was a laborious and dangerous task for early artisans of the period. This rare ochre painted grain surface is exceptionally well done by a talented and practiced hand. The chest stands on a bracket base with small decorative spurs furthering the symmetry and congruity of the box. We note a small, about 1\" portion of the left bracket foot is missing. We have our restoration expert correcting the matter on this significant piece. The chest is a generous 50\" wide x 24\" deep x 28\" tall. The year is 1876, the United States is planning a celebration to honor the centennial anniversary of our new country and the signing of the Declaration of Independence. The Centennial International Exhibition was our first \"World's Fair\" on American soil. Visitors from all over the world visited Philadelphia during the 6 month showcase and marveled at the advancements in industry, agriculture, philosophy, and horticulture. The Centennial Exhibit was a great success with an estimated 10 million visitors attending. American pride was at an all time high, with our strengthened nationalism we enter an era of \"Colonial Revival\" in cabinet making and architecture. We believe this was made between 1840-1860 before the centennial. The Double fretwork doors open to reveal three adjustable full size interior shelves and 3 half shelves with a satin yellow and white striped interior. The case is hand dovetailed with an attractive pierced gallery along the cornice. The bottom of the case is further decorated with pierced corbels and a pierced center applique. We must have forgotten to measure this. A good amount of these are in the sunburst finish and we don't find those desirable with our clients. This is the one we've been after and we are thrilled to be selling it. It has a total of 28 lights that consist of Four huge ovals, Eight half ovals and Sixteen triangular lights. We note (and didn't even see it ourselves until we got it off site and back to the shop) two tiny cracks in two minor triangular lights. They are insignificant and probably caused by manufacturing. They are very hard to spot and are only noticeable if you are critically examining the breakfront. No major lights are damaged and that is the critical factor. This glass has to be heated and bent to form the true bubble effect and the bigger the bubble is made the more likelihood of its cracking. We have offered one very up close photo of what we are discussing here. Not to take up much more time discussing it, but if it was a true issue we wouldn't be selling it. We would simply ship this off to auction. Here, we tell you everything! You deserve nothing less when buying by photographs. That is the difference between us and some auction sale. We can only imagine how many panes of glass cracked while the furniture maker was trying to complete each one of these. Besides the well covered bubble glass this Breakfront has wonderful details, like an Egg \u0026amp; Dart carved crown molding, floral and acanthus carved fully formed columns, applied carved moldings on the case, molded doors and drawers. Our family has a strong background in the metal fabrication industry (Bay State Metals) \u0026amp; we know what work likes this requires. Each fits their respective chair perfectly with no overlaps. We find this addition beautiful and the braces makes it impossible (or better put extremely difficult) to have a guest apply too much weight to the back splats breaking one. It happens very often and usually by someone that does not appreciate the fact they are using a fine quality chair. These chairs are nicely defined by excellent craftsmanship and a very attractive mellowed finish. The fabric on their seats is passable but a bit tired with small staining and evidence of use. We find our clients desire to have their own fabric designs installed. These chairs are in great condition and each bares a tag stating they were made in England.
