Bay Colony Antiques is proud to offer for sale this wonderful 18th century antique hoop back Windsor chair. The hoop has a beaded edge and is finely formed and free of damage. The seven spindles on the back are also free of damage and have become proud over the years. The chairs are typically constructed with a pliable wood like Ash used for the hoop, a flexible but strong wood like Oak used for the spindles, a solid piece of pine that can be easily carved for the seat, and a strong hardwood for the legs like Maple. As the chairs age the joints actually tighten up as they shrink together. The chair is nice & sturdy and the painted surface looks great and is probably the original surface. A brighter red can be seen underneath the ox blood color but that’s because the paint was built up in layers. There are gold accents painted on the legs, stretchers, and at the back of the saddle seat. The chair measures 20 3/4” wide x 18” deep (15 1/2 @ base) x 37 1/2” tall with a 16 1/2” seat height.
