Bay Colony Antiques is proud to offer for sale this wonderful 19th century antique 20 drawer machinist / type makers file cabinet by Hamilton MFG CO. The art of printing has long been a passion of man and importance to history. As we evolved from the earliest carved wood blocks to moveable type, printing became much more elaborate and required more specialized tools. Hamilton MFG Co was founded in 1880 by Edward Hamilton and began by making wood type for printing until they noticed a shortage of capable type cabinets needed in a press room. In the following years they also created furnishings for medical offices, dentists, and various other niche uses. We generally find these with fitted drawers designed to hold smaller type. This cabinet is larger than most and the drawers can be used at full width making it much more practical for modern use. The cabinet has double paneled sides with lambs tongue fluting around the panels. All 24 drawers actuate with ease and retain their original Hamilton MFG CO pulls. The file is in fantastic condition with our only notes being a small piece of wood missing from one of the drawer faces and the front left corner of the top has a tiny bit of lift to it. We’ll ask our restorer to splice in a piece of oak and match the stain on the drawer face with the small loss. This file is wider than most and measures 35 3/4” wide x 24” deep x 44” tall. The drawers can be used at full width and have useable dimensions of 30 3/8” wide x 15” deep x 1” tall.
