With our highest compliments Bay Colony Antiques takes the utmost pleasure in offering this spectacular early American dropleaf table. This example was constructed during the height of the American Federal design period and embodies the superior craftsmanship and emphasis of quality materials in all aspects of traditional American furniture. We believe that this table was made in the Baltimore Maryland region sometime around the year 1815 with a conservate dating of circa 1810 - 1820. The top of the table is constructed with old growth Santa Domingan mahogany hardwood with brilliant figuring in the grain of the wood and a warmth not found in lesser grades of mahogany lumber. The leaves were constructed with sequential cuts of Mahogany and orientated in a manner where the table is nearly identical from either side. The table has a well formed single drawer with excellent dovetail joinery and either end of the table is fashioned with a spectacular floral embossed ring pull which is closer to a finely made piece of jewelry than a traditional piece of furniture hardware. The pedestal of the table is fashioned in the style of an Egyptian obelisk which became a hallmark of American classical furniture and continued into the French Empire movement as a renewed fascination into the culture was rekindled with Napoleon's exploits into Egypt. The table is supported by four finely molded and tapered down swept legs which each terminate with a brass lion paw cap fixed to each foot. In the past two centuries this table has been well cared for and maintained as evident from the exceptional condition and overall sturdiness. The original brass caster wheels allow for the table to be effortlessly moved around. This table is well suited for continued use and we sincerely hope to find a deserving home for this wonderful American heirloom where it will be cherished for generations to come. The table measures 21 1/4" wide x 41" deep x 29 3/4" tall when the leaves are down. When the leaves are locked up the tabletop measures 49 1/2" wide x 41" deep.
