With our highest compliments and utmost honors, Bay Colony Antiques is extremely proud to offer for sale this fantastic 18th century antique South Carolina Mahogany pie crust tea table. We’ve spent a lot of time in Charleston and it’s one of our favorite cities and we absolutely love their furniture. We strongly believe this is a Charleston table and have seen similar tables in the MESDA collection, the MET, the MFA, and private collections throughout the country. The table has a single board Mahogany top with a carved pie crust edge and a birdcage mechanism that allows the top to turn. The construction of the birdcage and the cleats is consistent with tables that came out of Charleston in the 18th century. While Virginia was growing Tobacco, South Carolina’s most profitable crops were rice & indigo. Most collectors are probably familiar with rice carved plantation beds which originated in the Carolinas. Those beds came to be because the southern plantation owners wanted their crops that gave them their immense fortunes represented in their furniture. Likely commissioned for a grand rice plantation this table has a rice carving on the pedestal that’s repeated 3 times throughout the body. We’d also like to point out the c scroll carvings that face each other at the top of the knee. This closed scroll motif was popular in South Carolina and further strengthens our confidence in our attribution. The talon feet are finely carved and the cabriolet legs are well proportioned. The table is in fantastic condition with our only notes being minor surface wear and an old repair to the pedestal. When the table is flipped up like in our gallery photo, the table measures 23” wide x 18” deep x 39 1/2” tall. When the tabletop is locked down the table measures 27 1/2” tall.
